Did San Jose give a $26 million ‘bailout’ to a struggling affordable housing developer?

Since late last year, San Jose has authorized funneling more than $26 million to one of the city’s largest developers and managers of affordable housing in an effort to shore up its finances, even as local officials raised concern about the nonprofit’s “long-term sustainability,” city records show.First Community Housing, which owns and operates about 16 properties in San Jose, is a crucial player in the city’s push to alleviate its deepening housing crisis. In total, the city has invested at least $87 million to help the nonprofit build more than 1,900 affordable apartments.City officials, in documents presented to the City Council in December, described First Community Housing as having tried to essentially triple its construction pipeline in the face of rising development costs and a shortage of public subsidies, leaving it “financially over-extended and unable to meet all of its financial obligations” despite the inflow of public money. ...S.F. 49ers legends will chat it up with Kristi Yamaguchi in new ‘Unscripted’ series

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A special edition of "Cuomo" will air Monday on News Nation featuring a town hall called "Crime in America." Journalist and show host Chris Cuomo will speak with mayors, crime victims, and law enforcement about potential solutions to crime in American cities. KRON4 News Anchors Darya Folsom and James Fletcher spoke with Cuomo Thursday morning about what he dug up on San Francisco's crime and public image problems. "Obviously, San Francisco has been in the crosshairs of national scrutiny. The problem, I believe, is being exaggerated, but more importantly, misunderstood. People twist reality to their own agenda. We got to be afraid of twisting data, and we have to be afraid of simple solutions to complex problems. And crime is at the top of the list (for) complex problems," Cuomo said. Folsom said when she's traveling, and tells people from outside the Bay Area that she's from San Francisco, "the first thing people say is ... 'oh my God it's dangerous.' What do...Sprains, strains and ACL tears. What to know about some of the NFL’s most common injuries

Hamstring pulls, ligament tears and ankle sprains can be as formidable an opponent for NFL teams as a high-scoring offense or stingy defense.“There’s a 100% injury rate in the NFL,” seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady once said.Navigating those injuries could make the difference between a squad seeing its season sink or beating the odds and making the playoffs. Here’s a look at some of the most common injuries suffered by NFL players throughout the season:ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURESThe Achilles is the longest and strongest tendon in the body and stretches from the heel to the calf. It’s a springy band located behind the ankle and just above the heel that helps players push off their feet, jump and accelerate.Due to overuse or excessive force placed on the tendon, it can tear or rupture. Surgery is typically necessary to reconnect the ends, sidelining a player for several months due to the extensive rehabilitation needed.ACL/PCL/MCL/LCL TEARSThe anterior cruciate, poster...Saquon Barkley followed his heart in signing franchise tag and joining the Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Star running back Saquon Barkley followed his heart in signing his franchise tag and joining the New York Giants for the start of training camp.Speaking for the first time since signing a one-year, $11 contract earlier Tuesday, Barkley said he wanted to play the game he loved, realized he had little leverage in contract talks after being tagged and hoped having a second straight big season would help increase the value of running backs across the NFL.“I had an epiphany,” Barkley said Thursday after the second day of practice. “Now, the reality of it is, I kind of just followed my heart.”The Giants and Barkley failed to reach a deal on a multi-year contract extension on July 17, meaning he could only play on a one-year deal, centered around the $10.1 million franchise tag the Giants placed on him on March. There was speculation Barkley would sit out a part of training camp or possibly the entire season if he was very unhappy. It never came that clos...Amazon cuts jobs in its Fresh Grocery stores as it aims to rein in costs

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon is cutting jobs in its Fresh Grocery stores as part of a restructuring plan in the U.S.The company confirmed Thursday that its eliminating “zone lead” roles, a lower-level management position in its grocery stores that, among other things, oversees associates and deals with customer issues. Amazon did not disclose how many employees would lose their jobs as a result. The Washington Post had reported late Wednesday that hundreds of Fresh employees would be let go. “Like any retailer, we periodically assess our stores’ organizational needs and make decisions to increase efficiencies for our employees and deliver customer value,” Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin said in a prepared statement. “As a result, we’ve decided to evolve our in-store staffing and operations model to better serve our customers and teams.” The retailer said it will work with affected employees to help them find new roles within the company and employees who leave Amazon will be given seve...What’s next for Hunter Biden in court and Congress after his plea deal derails

WASHINGTON (AP) — The unraveling of Hunter Biden’s plea agreement has thrust his criminal case into uncertain waters and given new fodder to Republican critics in Congress as they push ahead with investigations into the president’s youngest son. Biden was supposed to plead guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges for failing to pay taxes. But U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika in Delaware put the brakes on the guilty plea after raising concerns during an hourslong hearing about the structure and terms of the agreement and another deal that would allow him to avoid prosecution on a gun charge if he meets certain conditions.Plea deals are carefully negotiated between defense lawyers and prosecutors over the course of weeks or months and it’s unusual — especially in high-profile cases — for judges to not sign off on them. But Wednesday’s hearing revealed that the two sides apparently did not see eye to eye on the scope of the agreement around a non-prosecution...Sports on TV for Friday, July 28

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Lawrence Guy won’t say whether he is content with his contract situation with the New England Patriots. He’s at training camp. For now, that’s enough. The veteran defensive lineman reported as scheduled this week and has been on the field each of the first two days of workouts after skipping the team’s optional offseason program in the spring and last month’s mandatory minicamp.“Me and my agent have been in discussions with the organization, and I’ll keep that private and between us,” Guy said on Thursday. “I’m here. I have a big smile on my face. I’m going to do whatever I can for the organization and work as hard as I can. That’s why we play this game, we play this game to be on the field.” Guy is entering the third season of the four-year, $11.5 million contract he signed in 2021. He’s been with the Patriots since 2017 and is entering his 13th NFL season. It’s included stops at five different teams, but he’s had his longest and most productive years with t...Stock market today: Wall Street rally fades as investors review upbeat economic, earnings reports
