Every January, thousands of people flock to Downtown Denver to watch cowboys drive a herd of longhorn steers up 17th Street as the kickoff to the annual National Western Stock Show. The parade is led by that photogenic cattle drive, followed by a variety of literal show ponies, cars, tractors and notable figures and celebrities.Getting to know sheep during the Folklife Fair in Hailey, Idaho, near Ketchum where the Trailing of the Sheep happens each Oct.. (Mindy Sink, Special to The Denver Post)“Stock shows, such as the National Western, are largely devoted to showing various breeds of livestock,” said Stan Searle of Searle Ranch in Monument, which has been providing the cattle and cowboys and cowgirls for this tradition since 2006.“Adding a unique dimension, the epic reenactment of a cattle drive celebrates an era in the settlement of the Western U.S. The great cattle drives of the late 1800s fostered the establishment of the open-range cattle industry,” he added. The parade act...

“Study for Obedience” and more short book reviews from readers

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:28:00 GMT

Editor’s note: The opinions of the smart, well-read women in my Denver book club mean a lot, and often determine what the rest of us choose to pile onto our bedside tables. So we asked them, and other readers, to share these mini-reviews with you. Have any to offer? Email [email protected].“Study for Obedience,” by Sarah Bernstein (Knopf Canada, 2023)“Study for Obedience,” by Sarah Bernstein (Knopf Canada, 2023)A very accommodating (doormat?) woman moves to a remote, foreign village (where she doesn’t speak the language) to become her brother’s housekeeper and caretaker.  She immediately falls under suspicion for witchcraft or worse, as mysterious tragedies repeatedly befall the villagers’ animals and livestock shortly after her arrival. The entire novel is written as an interior monologue from the isolated sister’s point of view. But her lack of understanding, both literally and figuratively, as to the truth of her circumstances leaves at least thi...

Editor’s note: This is part of The Know’s series, Staff Favorites. Each week, we offer our opinions on the best that Colorado has to offer for dining, shopping, entertainment, outdoor activities and more. (We’ll also let you in on some hidden gems). I have favorite ski areas, backcountry ski tours, hikes and bike rides, and it’s always hard for me to decide which ones I like best. But when it comes to ski town restaurants, one stands far above the others: Pepi’s Restaurant and Bar in Vail.Located only 500 feet from Gondola One in the Vail Village base area, Pepi’s has been serving authentic Austrian cuisine since the early days of Vail in 1964. It was founded by Pepi Gramshammer, an Austrian ski racing star of the 1950s, along with his wife Sheika. Together they built Pepi’s and an adjoining hotel called Gasthof Gramshammer into one of Vail’s most iconic destinations. Pepi died in 2019 at 87, but Sheika is still around.Pepi Gramshammer was an Austrian s...

Man accused of fatal RTD bus stabbing was released on parole despite public safety concerns, records show

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:28:00 GMT

A Colorado parole board hearing for Vinchenzo Moscoso, the 30-year-old accused of stabbing two people to death in northwest Denver in September, shows state officials went against a parole officer’s recommendations to revoke Moscoso’s parole and allowed him to be released from jail despite concerns that he was a safety risk to the community. The state’s parole division recommended revoking Moscoso’s parole because his history of drunken driving made him a public safety risk, according to a recording of the October 2022 hearing obtained through the Colorado Open Records Act.Instead, the parole board ordered Moscoso’s parole be continued, and he was released from the Jefferson County Jail on March 29.Moscoso is accused of first-degree murder in the deaths of Fidel Sanchez-Banuelos, 51, and Judith Corcoran, 83, on Sept. 14.Moscoso boarded a Regional Transportation District bus just after 5 a.m. in the 3200 block of North Federal Boulevard and began stabbing...

49ers explain what clinching the No. 1 seed early means to them

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:28:00 GMT

SANTA CLARA – Nick Bosa was a mere rookie when he first enjoyed the thrill of clinching a playoff berth, sealed by Dre Greenlaw’s dramatic goal-line tackle at Seattle in the 2019 regular-season finale. That epic win clinched the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. Sunday, the 49ers returned to that top spot, which offers an even better inside track to the franchise’s elusive sixth Super Bowl win.“The way it happened last time was insane. But this is pretty crazy, too,” Bosa said of the No. 1 seed. “To clinch it before the season is over is huge.”The 49ers (12-4) do not need to deploy injured players, such as Christian McCaffrey with his mild calf strain, when they host the Los Angeles Rams (9-7) before taking off next weekend’s wild-card round of the playoffs.Unlike in 2019, the NFL playoffs now only afford a bye in the wild-card round to each conference’s No. 1 seed. Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledges the competitive advantage that comes with avoiding the first round.“Every game in the NF...

Newton: Will California voters believe Big Oil or Jane Fonda?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:28:00 GMT

When Hiram Johnson and the California Progressives adopted the referendum, ballot initiative and recall process just over a century ago, they had a fairly specific goal in mind. They sought to reserve power for the people in instances where big business, specifically the Southern Pacific Railroad, wielded corrupt influence. The reforms were meant to allow the electorate to remove the officials responsible, pass laws over their objections, or undo their acts. People over business.Yet next fall Californians will consider a referendum sponsored by big business to undo the act of the people’s elected leaders — a recurring theme in recent years. The specific matter at issue is Senate Bill 1137, a 2022 law that bans oil drilling within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, hospitals and the like. Oil companies responded by circulating petitions to challenge the legislation with a referendum, and voters will get the opportunity to decide its fate this year.“It’s an egregious attack on d...
