Europe and the U.S. are still trying to figure out if they are friends or rivals in the multitrillion-dollar clean energy arms race among the world’s superpowers, with U.S. President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreeing Friday to a series of moves to deescalate a trade spat.Biden and von der Leyen issued a joint statement after their White House meeting saying the governments would “immediately” begin talks to bolster critical minerals supply chains between the two allies, with an eye toward allowing EU companies to take advantage of key electric vehicle tax credits in the U.S. climate law.The governments will also engage in “a dialogue on subsidy transparency,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, adding they would set a deadline for completing negotiations on standards to promote steel and aluminum made with fewer carbon emissions. After a winter during which the EU threw constant barbs at the U.S. over Biden’s sig...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:24:30 GMT

Regardless of the results at Sunday’s ceremony, the 2023 Oscars made history for Asian representation, largely on the strength of “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”With four actors of Asian descent nominated, this year’s 95th Academy Awards have the most Asian representation ever, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — starring Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese immigrant — is a favorite for best picture. The nominations mark long-overdue progress for Hollywood’s recognition of Asian-led films, says Zhen Zhang, the director of NYU’s Asian Film & Media Initiative.“There have been many Asian and Asian-American actors, … cinematographers, writers and so on trying to break into the industry and go to the top, but it has been a long trek, a very hard struggle,” Zhang told the Daily News.“In many ways, it’s a defining moment of what I consider the new American-Asian wave. Every time such an Asian film comes into public view and gets a lot of buzz and accolades, crossing over into the main...

Patriots release punter Jake Bailey

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:24:30 GMT

The Patriots need a new punter after announcing the release of Jake Bailey on Friday.Bailey, a fifth-round pick in 2019, was coming off his worst season in Foxboro. He ranked dead last in average and net average among players with more than 10 punts. He was a first-team All-Pro his rookie season, but looked nothing like that player last season. The Patriots were proactive in signing him to a four-year $13.5 million extension prior to last season (making him the NFL’s highest-paid punter at the time), but didn’t exactly get the best bang for their buck.He wound up on injured reserve last year with a back problem, then was hit with a team-imposed suspension. So there were issues on both sides.Michael Palardy, who was signed last year to a one-year deal, wasn’t very good after taking over for Bailey late in the year.So the Patriots will be looking for a punter, either in free agency, or the draft.  One name to keep an eye on is Rutgers’ Adam Korsak, who won the Ray Guy Award...

LONDON — Former England captain Gary Lineker was temporarily removed on Friday from his role as presenter of the BBC’s flagship soccer highlights show in the wake of his criticism of the British government’s new asylum policy. The long-running “Match of the Day” program, which has been a national institution in Britain since the 1960s, will be aired on Saturday “without studio presentation or punditry,” the BBC said in an extraordinary development after a slew of Lineker’s colleagues announced they wouldn’t appear on the show without him.In a post on Tuesday on his Twitter account that has 8.7 million followers, Lineker — one of England’s greatest soccer players and now among the U.K.’s most influential media figures — compared lawmakers’ language about migrants to that used in Nazi Germany. The BBC considers Lineker posting such views on social media as a breach of its guidelines. The network said it held discussions with Lineker over his involvement in “Match...

The New York hush-money probe of Donald Trump explained

NEW YORK (AP) — In the final weeks of the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump’s lawyer tried to buy the silence of a porn actress who said she had a sexual encounter with the Republican during his days as a reality TV star.More than six years later, New York prosecutors appear to be close to deciding whether Trump should face charges in connection with that payoff, in what could become the first criminal case ever brought against a former president.Thursday’s news that the Manhattan district attorney invited Trump to testify before a grand jury next week suggested prosecutors were serious about bringing charges in a probe that looked like yesterday’s news just a few months ago.Trump has denied wrongdoing and that he had any extramarital affairs, and he blasted the probe in a Truth Social post as a “political Witch-Hunt, trying to take down the leading candidate, by far, in the Republican Party”Here’s a refresher on how things got to this point:WHAT IS TH...
