The House Oversight and Accountability Committee moved forward with a bill that would expand federal employment opportunities for people who used cannabis at some point in their lives. The Cannabis Users’ Restoration of Eligibility Act passed the committee in a 30-14 vote. It would allow federal agencies to consider applicants with a prior history of cannabis use when they are making employment and security clearance decisions. NORML, the nation’s oldest cannabis reform organization, praised the move by Congress. “Applicants for federal employment and security clearances should not be unfairly disqualified solely for their past cannabis use,” NORML’s Political Director Morgan Fox said. “While it is disappointing that the committee did not see fit to stop federal agencies from discriminating against those responsible adults and patients who are current consumers of cannabis, this legislation will nonetheless open up new opportunities to millions of Americans, increase the talent pool ...Women in Cannabis Remember Brownie Mary

For this week’s Women in Business issue, we reached out to the ladies of the cannabis industry to see what Mary Jane Rathbun, more famously known as Brownie Mary, means to them. While Brownie Mary was most famously an activist providing thousands of brownies for San Francisco’s AIDS community in the 1980s and 1990s, it is important not to disenfranchise the fact she was one of the early female entrepreneurs of the game, too. After decades as a waitress, she started selling brownies in the 1970s to make an extra buck. She would go on to help a lot of people, too, but for the sake of this piece we were celebrating the business side of things. These days, Lauren McNaughton is the director of brand marketing for Kiva and Lost Farms. In a past life, she helped build one of the largest infused baked goods companies California will ever see, Korova. McNaughton spent the tail end of the 215 era delivering boxes of cookies and brownies out of her trunk and being the boots on the ground for a...Lydia Loveless Digs Spoon

Lydia Loveless Digs Spoon: Alt-country singer and songwriter Lydia Loveless told us about her Spoon experience.Lydia Loveless: Spoon at Newport in Columbus, OH. Right after Hot Thoughts came out. I can’t quite recall the time of year. I was able to get on the guest list through my then boyfriend and I took my sisters with me. We stood in the VIP section – an entire giant roped off area with only the three of us. People kept trying to get us kicked out or offer us money to come stand with us. It was hysterical. We were dancing and singing and having an amazing time.Spoon is seriously the best live show. I normally don’t care much about light shows because I’m too busy trying not to have a panic attack from them, but theirs was truly cool to witness. All their songs are catchy as hell and they are so dialed in. It was the last really good time I got to have with both my sisters together and I’ll never forget it.Lydia Loveless Digs Spoon: Lydia Loveless’ Nothing’s Gon...As homelessness grows, Alameda County declares a state of emergency

When Alameda County adopted a $2.5 billion plan to address homelessness, it sought to stem the tide of a crisis that has intensified since the start of the pandemic. But nearly two years into the multifaceted effort, more people are still becoming homeless than are being housed. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously this week to approve a countywide state of emergency on homelessness that will give officials one more tool for turning the tide.“We can’t just allow people to continue to live like this,” Supervisor Nate Miley said in an interview. In Alameda County, the number of unhoused people grew by 22% to 9,747 people between 2017 and 2022, the majority of whom live in or outside cars. According to the county’s declaration, many of the unhoused have at least one disability, and the maximum social security disability check of around $1,000 is woefully inadequate to afford housing in the hyper-expensive Bay Area,Furthermore, experts who work with the unhoused communit...Santa Clara University: Cross country team’s goofy team pics — a viral sensation last year — return

For many, picture day is about looking your very best. But for Santa Clara University’s men’s cross country team, bad haircuts, outrageous mustaches and goofy expressions are par for the course for annual roster photos.Harvey Chilcott recalled the shocked look on his barber’s face when he went to get his hair fixed the day after he shot his roster photo about a week ago.The fifth-year master’s student from Tasmania had asked his neighbors to give him a jagged and lopsided curtain haircut — a sharp contrast from what the popular ’90s look worn by a young Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio is supposed to look like — before taking the scissors into his own hands and carving out some bald spots.Santa Clara University cross country runner Harvey Chilcott, a grad student, looks into a mirror as he has his hair cut by his neighbors Katie Walsh, center, and Caroline Harrington, right, as teammates look on as they prepare for their headshots the night before media ...Renderings for massive Concord Naval Weapons Station development slated for public review in November

CONCORD — Drafts of detailed renderings and land-use plans for the massive transformation envisioned for the former Concord Naval Weapons Station should finally be ready for community input by Nov. 14.That’s a rapid acceleration for a project that’s taken nearly two decades and three different master developers to conceive the latest billion-dollar vision: tens of thousands of homes and millions of square-feet of schools, offices, shops and restaurants.Up until now, that vision has more closely resembled a mirage since the turn of the century, largely thanks to a history of labor disputes, power plays and allegations of backroom deals. The current, bold timeline was unanimously approved during a special meeting Tuesday, when the Concord City Council — acting as the Local Reuse Authority — officially inked an exclusive negotiating agreement with Brookfield Properties — the first of many multiple legal agreements that will clarify final timelines, costs and strategies...Cordeiro keeps San Jose State’s offense moving heading into Mountain West opener vs. Air Force

SAN JOSE — All things considered, San Jose State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro is having a better season than you might think. The Spartans are 1-3 heading into Friday night’s Mountain West Conference opener against Air Force, but Cordeiro is putting up numbers similar to the ones he did last season when he was second-team all-conference and helped guide SJSU to a seven-win season and the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The senior is on pace to pass for about 2,500 yards, 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions despite a relentless season-opening schedule that has seen the Spartans face two top-20 teams and another defending conference champion. According to SportSource Analytics, the Spartans have played the ninth-toughest schedule in the nation to open the season.“He’s such a valuable asset to our team,” SJSU head coach Brent Brennan said this week. “We go as he goes a little bit on offense.”Through four games, the Hawaii product has passed for 783 yards and six touchdowns with just one ...Head of San Francisco-based private equity firm accused of assault by ex-partner
