LIVERMORE — Motorists can have their catalytic converters marked with a traceable ID number free of charge Tuesday in Livermore.Livermore police and Las Positas College are hosting the etching event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college’s Automotive Department on Loop Road, Building 3500. The cutoff time for the last vehicle in line will be 3 p.m.The goal is to make catalytic converters less attractive to thieves and easier to trace if stolen, according to a press release. Technicians will take control of vehicles to drive them onto a lift. The service is first come, first served, and no appointment is required.Catalytic converters, which reduce the pollutants a vehicle emits, hold valuable metals in their core, making them attractive to criminals. In 2021, about 1,600 catalytic converters were reported stolen each month in California, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California. And California accounted for 37% of all catalytic co...Warriors add young center on two-way deal

The Warriors signed a former Rockets center in their hunt for a backup big man, but it was not Dwight Howard, whose meeting with the team last week drew interest online.Instead, Golden State has signed Usman Garuba to a two-way contract, meaning he can bounce between the NBA and the Warriors’ G League team in Santa Cruz.Garuba, 21, is a 2021 first-round pick who played backup minutes for Houston last season after splitting time between the NBA and G League as a rookie. He played in 75 games for the Rockets in 2022-23, averaging 12.9 minutes per game. He scored only 3.0 points per game but averaged 4.1 rebounds in those limited minutes. Additionally, one-third of his shot attempts were 3-pointers, and he made 41% of them, though the sample is small (24-of-59).Related ArticlesGolden State Warriors | Want a part of the Warriors? 10% of the ownership stake — for about $700 million — reportedly is up for sale Golden State Warriors | Golden Stat...UC Berkeley frat house raided, police seize stolen sign worth $25,000

BERKELEY — Police here are investigating the theft of a $25,000 sign that was stolen from outside a university dormitory and ended up on the roof of a nearby fraternity house, authorities said.In a Sept. 13 law enforcement operation, UC Berkeley police recovered the sign from the Sigma Chi fraternity at 2345 College Ave., authorities said. The sign had been stolen five days earlier from the Christian Hall dormitory on Durant Avenue, authorities said. While the incident has all the makings of a fraternity prank, UC Berkeley police treated it as a felony investigation. The sign was bolted into the cement and cost roughly $3,000 to install, well past the $400 threshold for felony vandalism in California. With an estimated value of $25,000, it also qualifies as a felony grand theft under state law.The trouble started Sept. 8, when a UC Berkeley employee reported the theft. Four days later, a UC Berkeley student spotted the sign on the Sigma Chi roof. Police say it had been spray pa...Indian Rasoi takes over Cafe Colucci space in Oakland

Oakland’s upper Temescal District was deprived of a spot for highly spiced foods from across the world when Cafe Colucci, a popular Ethiopian eatery now hosting a Michelin-cred pop-up, departed for a location farther away. That void’s filled at last with the arrival of Indian Rasoi in the old Colucci space at 6427 Telegraph Ave. It’s a colorfully decorated restaurant specializing in the cuisine of Northern India – long-simmered curries, tandoori-grilled meats, hot chai and cold lassi.Rasoi opened earlier this month and on a recent stop-in, appeared to be doing brisk take-out business. A few diners sat in the main room under a rainbow canopy of hanging fabric and inverted umbrellas. A grand opening sign flapped in the wind, beckoning residents in this borderland of Oakland and Berkeley and passing students from the UC campus up the street. The menu has the standard Indian breakdown of appetizers (samosas, pakora, some crispy chaats), biryani, curries (lamb, chicken, s...Fact-checking Trump’s recent lies about 2020 election

By Daniel Dale | CNNFormer President Donald Trump made a series of inflammatory social media posts on Sunday in which, among other things, he lied that Senate Democrats rigged the 2020 election and baselessly accused the company that owns NBC and MSNBC of treason. The 2020 electionSince November 2020, when Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden, he has lied dozens of times that the free and fair election was “rigged” and “stolen.” In a post on Sunday, Trump added an additional false claim on top of the usual false claim – this time declaring that Senate Democrats perpetrated the (nonexistent) election theft.Trump was addressing last week’s federal indictment of Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, on corruption charges Menendez denies. Trump asked why the FBI doesn’t raid the homes of “Senate Democrat’s” like it searched his Florida home last year for classified documents he had retained after his presidency – baselessly calling that court-approved search illegal. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Having to play two games on the road in less than a week gave the New York Giants three days to look back at their first three games and to consider what’s gone wrong. It’s nothing like a season ago when the Giants won their first two games under new coach Brian Daboll and six of their first seven. It carried the team to its first playoff berth since 2016 with a 9-7-1 record. This season has been much shakier. New York is 1-2. It has been blown out by the Dallas Cowboys (2-1) and San Francisco 49ers (3-0) and it needed to match its greatest comeback in franchise history for a 31-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals (1-2).The job is not going to get easier with Seattle (2-1), Miami (3-0) and Buffalo (2-1) over the next three weeks, especially with all that is going wrong.Daniel Jones and the offense are struggling. The defense is missing tackles, not forcing turnovers and failing to get off the field, even on third-and-long situations. If there has ...Jaguars ‘have to do better’ with a pass rush that looks pedestrian for a second straight year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jaguars coach Doug Pederson paused for roughly 15 seconds — it seemed like an eternity in a silent meeting room — before trying to explain Jacksonville’s lackluster pass rush against Houston. There wasn’t much to say since the Texans were without four starting offensive linemen and going with a rookie quarterback who had been sacked an NFL-leading 11 times in the first two weeks.“You can maybe point to several things, but we have to do better,” Pederson said. “It starts up front.”Two weeks after Josh Allen and Travon Walker combined for four sacks at Indianapolis — two of them because Allen ran Anthony Richardson out of bounds — Jacksonville’s pass rush returned to its pedestrian 2022 form in a 37-17 debacle at home to AFC South rival and previously winless Houston on Sunday.Neither Allen nor Walker nor anyone else got to rookie C.J. Stroud, who had extra time to throw for the first time this season. Stroud completed 20 of 30 passes for 280 yards, with two t...Latest news
